Today we are looking at Evercade 16: Jaleco Collection 1. All ten games on this cartridge are new to me, which is always exciting as I never know what I'm going to get.
Here is the ranking for my favourite games on the Jaleco Collection 1. Click the video below to see footage of each game in ranking order, or look further down for my thoughts on each game:
10. Bases Loaded
Not being a fan of baseball or having any prior knowledge made this a tricky game to get the hang of. I did have limited fun, but it wasn't long before I moved on and have yet to have the urge to dive back in.
09. Super Goal! 2
A football game, sorry, soccer! This is the first one I've played on the Evercade and I am in no way shocked to find out that I am terrible at it. The game was fun enough but I need to play it a lot more before I get any good at it!
08. City Connection
I will admit hearing about people's love for this game, but I just don't feel it. Admittedly, it took me awhile to get the hang of the timing to jump to higher levels on the screen, and I found the controls overall a little frustrating. These niggles did impact my enjoyment of the game quite a bit.
07. Brawl Brothers
The next two entries are so similar they could probably be ranked in either order, though I do, for whatever reason, slightly prefer Rival Turf! Both are side scrolling beat 'em ups with a choice of characters, and a decent amount of enemies thrown your way. The controls are simple and it's always fun punching, grabbing and slamming enemies to the ground.
06. Rival Turf!
As mentioned above there is hardly anything in it with this and the previous title. But, when having to make a choice I think Rival Turf! just edges it.
05. Totally Rad
It feels and looks a bit like the NES Mega Man games, but the weapons have been changed to magic - and it doesn't feel anywhere near as hard. The script and games title are very of the time, but feels out of place with the feel of the game. Evidently the tone and story were changed for the game's western release.
04. The Ignition Factor
As a fireman you explore buildings, put out fires and rescuing trapped citizens. This is made trickier when some wont leave unless you complete a task like finding someone else connected to them. Before each stage you get to choose what you will take in with you: A rope, an axe, alternate extinguishers etc. The running mechanic take's a little getting used to but apart from that it's great fun.
03. Astyanax
I loved this game, it reminded me to some degree of the old Castlevania games as well as games like ghouls and Ghost. An interesting gimmick is a power bar that completely depletes after a single attack. Your attack is more powerful if you let your power bar fill up completely before you strike again.
02. Earth Defence Force
A gorgeous looking side scrolling shooter. What's lovely about this game is not only do you get to choose which weapon you want to start the game with, but that weapon levels up and becomes more powerful the more you use it. A great feature which decreases the level of frustration is the weapons level doesn't reset every time you die.
01. Operation Logic Bomb
These types of games are my jam, reminds me of great titles like the Chaos Engine and the Alien breed series (of course I had to mention it!) It's fun to explore the levels shooting the hell out of everything. The game has a great feature that lets you lock the direction you are firing in with the hold of a button, making it possible to shoot in the same direction while strafing, or whilst running in the opposite direction. The game is also dotted with little cutscenes that add a lot to the atmosphere. I really loved this game and couldn't stop coming back.
Final Thoughts
An enjoyable cartridges overall. It may not rank as high as some of the others so far, but there is definitely enough here to you busy with a lot of variety and a fair few crackers to play. Operation Logic Bomb is a dream!
Next time we will be looking at Piko Interactive Collection 2 - a sports heavy set. I'm not a massive Sports fan so it will be interesting to play through and see how I feel about this one. Until then my friends, be seeing you x
