This week I've been playing through the Evercade 08: Mega Cat Studios Collection I. What's interesting about this collection is all the games are actually modern, but made for retro systems. I can't wait to find out what treasures lie within.
But before we get onto this weeks countdown, lets talk a moment about the exciting news. Its finally been revealed, the Evercade's 20th Collection - Mega Cat Studios Collection II.
Below is the full list of games:
Alter Ego Dreamwalker
Arkagis
DevWill Too
Gluf
Misplaced
Remeow & Julicat
Roniu's Tale
Yazzie
The great news is we've now also been given a release date, August 28th, and it's already up for pre-order along with one of my most anticipated cartridges - The Codemasters Collection
Here is an image of the box art and cartridge posted on Wednesday by @Evercaderetro on Twitter:
And here is a link to their recently posted Trailer of the new collection on YouTube:
Now that's out the way it's time for this weeks countdown. As always, here is the video if you want to see in-game footage of the games, and/or look beneath for my thoughts on each title:
10 Log Jammers
I love the idea of this game, but even on the earliest level your opponents are absolutely insane. If they were a tiny slower at the start it would definitely help, but regardless its a lot of fun with that
"I'll win next time" feel to it. This one will definitely take me a long time to beat.
09 Justice Duel
This game reminds me so much of Joust. Great fun for quick blasts, though the controls take a bit of getting used to. Its nice it has the inclusion of achievements, a modern idea not present in retro titles. These give you more reasons to return to the game.
08 Almost Hero
I love the look of this game, and the way the separate areas are connected to a hub stage so you can choose which way you want to go, apart from that its quite a basic scrolling beat em up. Enjoyable but not enough there to keep me coming back as much as the games higher in the list.
07 Coffee Crisis
I love Coffee, its amazing, isn't it? This is an enjoyable game where you fight aliens intent on getting all the coffee, amongst other things. I love the cartoon style and the story sections which really bring the game to life. Your characters animations are nice but it is quite hard to tell if you are doing any damage to enemies, there does not feel or hear to be any weight in your attacks, and the controls feel a little off, which takes some of the fun away, but its still an enjoyable play.
06 Creepy Brawlers
This reminds me of Punch-out so much, except its against monsters! Really, that's it, so if you like the sound of that, you'll like this. I enjoyed it a lot and played the hell out of it.
05 Little Medusa
A fun puzzler, where you've been turned into Medusa and have to use your unique petrification powers to help solve the puzzles in each level. A lot of fun where the puzzles get progressively trickier.
04 Super Painter
Despite the slightly floaty controls and dodgy jump, I found this game a lot of fun, It's exactly what you think it is, where you have to make your way around the level painting every surface before the exit to the next level appears - all the while avoiding creature of course. I've always had a slight weakness for these types of games, I just wish the controls and movement were a bit tighter.
03 Multidude
A fantastic puzzler. You switch control between different characters each with their own unique talents which can be a plus or minus depending on the situation. You must make them work together to complete each stage. Some can float and be used as a platform, some can jump and break platforms beneath etc. Its fun whenever you are introduced to a new type to play with, trying to work out what their ability is and how it will help solve the level.
02 Old Towers
I love, love, love this game! I love the speed, the soundtrack, the graphics. But most of all I love how addictive it is. Everything just seems to come together perfectly for this title, I just cant get enough of it! It was so close to being my number one game of the collection, I thought nothing can drag me away from playing this... that was until I got hold of the final game in the set..!
01 Tanzer
Wow, the speed of this thing. A fantastic horizontal shooter. Tough as nails but fair and fun enough that you don't mind the pain and continue to come back, death after death. The thumping soundtrack helps! You would think I would have more to say about it as it's my number one game of the collection, but its as simple as that! Worth buying the collection for this and Old towers alone, in my opinion. I can not praise either game enough!
Final Thoughts
Wow what a fantastic collection of games, I've really enjoyed playing through these titles and have found some new favourites I will come back to long in the future. Also a special mention to quite a few of the soundtracks on the cart, they were damn good! I also liked that a few of the titles had achievements much like trophies you get on Playstation. These are great addition to keep you coming back in an attempt to get them all.
Next week we will be checking out Everacade 09: Piko Interactive Collection I. There are 20 games included in this set and quite a few aren't simply score chases like many of the Atari collection were, so this feels like quite a big adventure before me. It should be fun. Until next time my friends, be seeing you x
