Another week, another Evercade Collection. This week I've been spending my time with Evercade 07: Interplay Collection II. I really enjoyed the first collection, even though there were only 6 titles, there was enough to keep me going back. As before we only have 6 titles with this second set, and a couple of those are sequels to what we had before. I wonder if it is as strong a line up as before? Let's find out...
Here is the countdown to my favourite game on the Interplay Collection II. As usual you can watch the video here, or just beneath are my thoughts on each of the titles:
6: Clay Fighter 2
Much like the previous Clay fighter game, though the graphics look a little better and the controls feel more responsive. They have changed the character roster significantly since the last outing which is interesting, and as the game is so similar to before at least there are different faces to play with. I will admit I'm not the biggest fan of this game and didn't come back to it much, the rest of the set kept me too busy.
5: The Adventures of Rad Gravity
This is another game I love the idea of. I really enjoyed the opening sections with the big chunky character sitting in his ship, warping to a new planet. The little display with the planet and being able to choose to beam down or go somewhere else was a neat touch. However once you do beam down you realise your character is much much smaller. The game then becomes a horizontal platformer where you work your through the level activating computer terminals, which in turn adds more locations to teleport to from the ship. I did enjoy this a lot though did find it a bit tricky to begin with. Definitely one I will go back to to tray and complete at some point.
4: Clay Mates
A great little platformer where you begin each stage as a ball of clay, when you find a coloured ball you turn into a specific clay animal with unique abilities. The fun is using each of the different animal types to reach different parts of the level you wouldn't otherwise be able to access. Very enjoyable and quite fast platforming adventure, with nice clean graphics and lots of collectables to search for.
3: The Brainies
I am a sucker for a good puzzler. This game has a simple idea, get each of the coloured Brainies onto their coloured marker. The trick is once a Brainie starts moving in a chosen direction, they don't stop until they hit a wall or object. The levels start simple, but soon get much more complex. It's made that much harder by a sometimes unforgiving timer. But this only spurs me on for one more try... which becomes about ten. Great fun overall, couldn't stop coming back to it all week.
2: Prehistorik Man
I nearly surprised everyone, including myself by having this game as my number one. It nearly was a couple of times because the game is so dang fun. It looks and sounds great, though some may find the sound effect for people talking to be a bit annoying. Another reason I love this game is you are marked at the end of the level on how much food etc you picked up, with a scolding if you didn't do too good. It made me go back to a level several times on my quest to get 100 percent. Such a great platformer!
1: Earthworm Jim 2
So in the end no surprises on what game steals the crown. Its it's hard to beat the insanity and fun of the game. Though more of the same, its definitely an improvement over its predecessor, with a slightly more forgiving difficulty, better controls, clearer graphics and much more variety between the levels. It will take me a while before I can complete this game fully, but I'm enjoying the tough journey none the less.
Final Thoughts
Another great Interplay Collection for the Evercade. Yes there are only 6 games, but at least four of them are great enough to easily justify a purchase. But which do I prefer out of the two Interplay Collections? That's tricky, they both have clay fighters which I'm not a fan of, but they both have Earth Worm Jim which I adore. Although you would think the second collection would just edge it into the lead with the inclusion of Prehistorik Man, the first collection has Battle Chess and the completely addictive Titan. Mmmm, yep... I'm still undecided!
As a bonus, and to coincide with the reveal of the 20th Evercade cartridge, tomorrow we will be delving into Evercade 08: Mega Cat Studios Collection I, and looking ahead to the Mega Cat Studios Collection II, due out this August. Until next time my friends, be seeing you x
