Welcome back my friends to another Dead and Stranded. Today we take a look at episode one: Bridget, where I show off my embarrassing skills in the first in-game face of with a group of BT's. I would like to say it was all planned, to show you what happens when things don't go according to plan. But no, I just sucked.
Without further ado, here's episode one. I'll catch you down below, under the video. Enjoy x
Death Stranding - Episode One: Bridget
"Game over man" is
obviously a 4th wall nod to video games, but could it also be a reference to Aliens? There are also a fair few nods
to Escape From New York (and obviously Metal Gear Solid to a degree, as the two will forever be linked.)
We meet Die-Hardman, yes
these awesome names keep coming. And if you hadn't guessed it yet, they are all
for a reason, some obvious, some not so. But please keep watching to find out why, I promise you it is worth the effort.
I will admit I have always had a fascination with masks and mirrors, and that's something this game seems to thrive on. Not just physical masks you can see but also the ones you can't. The mirror aspect is a little more complex, but we will get into that as the story continues.

Bridget
Sam's encounter with his Mother, played by the amazing Lindsey Wagner, is pretty fekked up to say the least. It's at turns touching and sinister, which pretty much sums up a lot of the themes in Death Stranding. I thought Lindsey was fantastic here but it was a shame we didn't get to see more of her...
Having to carry your mother's dead body on your back all the way to an incinerator is a pretty harsh thing to do. In these calmer moments the game can be really reflective and thoughtful, you almost don't know your doing it. And then the music hits and it's just perfect.
The way Kojima handles music in the game reminds me of how David Lynch used music at the end of most episodes of Twin Peaks the return. It was used as a time to reflect on what came before and think about all the questions that are gathering in our mind.

I tried to convey this in the video. It
gives you a chance to chill to one of the tracks, while taking in the absolutely
gorgeous visuals. This is the beautiful world we get to run around and play in!
When you are carrying loads on your back you have to think about its weight and how it effects your movements, you have to think about the terrain and how to move through it with this weight. The shoulder buttons on the controller represent Sam's left and right hands, you have to use these to balance yourself if the terrain is uneven. It is much less fiddly then it sounds and becomes second nature quite quickly, but it does mean that you have to think about every step you take in this world.

And we finally get BB and Sam together, though I can't believe they were going to incinerate the poor little thing. My goodness I love that baby. But we all have to remember the number one rule, do not get attached to BB!

Whenever BB 28
and Sam connect we get Mads flashbacks! No more needs to be said, lets just
enjoy them. I could listen to Mads say "BB" and sing a lullaby all day long.
And finally the BT encounter. When connected to BB you can actually see the BT's floating slightly above the land, but only if you stand completely still. Holding your breath helps when sneaking through, but hold it too long and Sam automatically tries to catch his breath. In this case it was enough for me to get detected.
If they do detect you, black oil fills the area and slimy figures try to pull you in. There is still the chance to escape if you can keep the scary buggers off, but lose your balance and they'll pull you in.
The BT's will drag your body through the black substance to a giant version, and if this one eats you, its void out time. If you can out run the creature and leave the area of black ooze you are safe. In this example, if the void out happened, the incinerator would have gone and there would be no where to burn the bodies in the future. Oh dear!
That's all we have time for in this episode. Join me again if you like, when we will be looking at episode 2: Amelie. This is where the main focus of the story comes into play. We will also be talking a little about that beach Sam keeps returning to. Is it an actual place or some kind of dream?
Until next, be seeing you x x
